The JRC at EUROSOIL 2008
The 2008 edition of the EUROSOIL congress, attracting over 1500 soil scientists from 77 countries as well as representatives from 43 European national soil science societies, was held in Vienna from the 25th to the 29th of August.
The JRC's Institute for Environment and Sustainability, as one of the principle organisers of the event, contributed over 20 oral presentations on a range of its recent scientific achievements in this field of science. Under the JRC's SOIL action, a one-day session on soil quality and the development of a new system of soil indicators was organised.
The congress comprised over 30 symposia as well as workshops and social events, with the aim of exchanging recent results in all domains of soil science and with a view to addressing the challenge of establishing a European Framework Directive for soil protection, similar to the EU's water framework directive.
A motion in support an EU Framework Directive on Soils was approved by the general assembly of the European Confederation of Soil Science Societies and addressed to the current Presidency of the EU.
Held every four years and following the 2004 edition in Freiburg, Germany, the congress has helped to establish a consolidated scientific basis for soil protection in Europe. The next EUROSOIL conference will be hosted by the Italian Soil Science Society in Bari, Italy, in 2012.
