JRC uses high speed communication network to support Chinese earthquake assistance
The Joint Research Centre has identified a key tool in the international effort to assist the provision of relief, reconstruction and analysis following the May 2008 earthquake in the Sichuan province of China.
The tool in question is a high capacity academic data link between the between the pan-European research network GÉANT2, run by the DANTE organisation, and Chinese research and education networks. The high speed connection is part of the jointly funded EU-China ORIENT project.
The ORIENT link is being used to transport the JRC's high-resolution satellite images of the areas devastated by the earthquake from Ispra, Italy directly to those leading relief work in the Chinese province.
The JRC is working alongside researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and at the request of the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology in order to determine the severity of damage to towns and cities, and to help protect the area from further risk when rebuilding begins.
