Conference: The Dynamics of Media and Content Industries


The JRC will host a multi sector International Media Content Conference on 25 and 26 October 2012 in Brussels to present and discuss the results of a multiannual research project developed by JRC Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS) and put them within the context of EU policies. It will bring together a highly diversified set of experts coming from leading companies and trade associations, policy makers and academia from Europe and the USA.

The three year research project "Statistical, ecosystems and competitiveness analysis of the Media and Content Industries" embraces a series of 9 studies covering Cinema, Music, Newspapers, Videogames, Book publishing and Broadcasting and aims at providing quantitative statistics, industrial and economic analysis under pressure of digitalisation and a critical summary of the main policies at stake.

The conference is organised within the JRC initiative European Forum for Science and Industry which was launched in early 2012 to strengthen dialogue and cooperation on the science needs of industry in key sectors for European competitiveness. Vladimir Šucha, JRC's Deputy Director General, will be the opening key note speaker to yield way to a pool of more than 25 leading experts who will discuss and confront the research conclusions. The Conference will also gather the participation of high level representatives of several Directorates General of the European Commission.

Topics such as strategies of new entrants, transfer of entertainment to the Internet, the role of the telecoms, or creative growth will trigger a research-based, horizontal approach to industry and policy Media Content matters. Among the confirmed speaks there are representatives from Columbia University, Grupo Planeta, US Motion Picture Association, Microsoft, WIPO, Telefonica or Google.
