The JRC can recruit individuals on a temporary basis using the following contractual possibilities:

Contract Staff members

The recruitment of Contract Staff members dealing with scientific and/or administrative tasks is organised through open competitions by the European Personnel Selection Office (EPSO). The JRC can recruit Contract Staff members in the four Function Groups (IV, III, II and I). For Function Groups IV, III and II, a short-term contract up to the maximum of 3 years can be offered. For Function Group I, an indeterminate contract can be offered.

Temporary Agents

The recruitment of specialist temporary agent positions dealing with scientific/technical tasks is organised through open competitions by the European Personnel Selection Office (EPSO).

Seconded National Experts

In order to allow the Commission to benefit from a high level of professional knowledge and experience, in particular in areas where such expertise is not readily available in-house, it can recruit Seconded National Experts (SNEs) for a defined period of time as stated in the Commission Decision. SNEs are staff employed by a national, regional or local public administration or an IGO.

Grantholders

The JRC offers contracts under the national employment law of the site where the JRC Institute is established to scientists embarking on doctoral studies, to those early on in their career and to those with experience.

JRC Trainees

The aims of the traineeship scheme are to enable students or recent graduates to practise what they have acquired during their studies; to experience the professional world; and to gain a first hand experience of the workings of the JRC, and of the European Commission, in general. There are three types of traineeships:

  1. training related to the preparation of a thesis for a university degree;
  2. training after university education (or its equivalent);
  3. industrial placement.
