The JRC, in collaboration with many international partners, is conceiving, establishing and maintaining databases and other information systems that serve as tools to policy makers and scientists, or provide valuable services to national and regional authorities as well as industry.
INSPIRE – Europe-wide access to geo-data

The planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of European environmental policy require high-quality, reliable geo-information. This information is already in existence in various countries and institutions, but often unfortunately not in a coherent form that can easily be collated for analysis, and not always available unconditionally and at any time.
It is to meet these circumstances that INSPIRE (Infrastructure for Spatial Information in Europe) is being established, as a framework for the construction of a European Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI). Once fully installed, INSPIRE will provide political and economic decision-takers, as well as scientists, with reliable geo-data for assessing environmental conditions across the whole of Europe

The European Co-Existence Bureau
Genetically modified corncob (Bt maize)
The mission of the The European Co-Existence Bureau (ECoB), which is currently being set up, will be to provide a platform to catalyse the exchange of technical-scientific information on best agricultural management practices for the co-existence of genetically modified crops with conventional and/or organic agriculture, and, on this basis, advance commonly agreed crop-specific guidelines to assist Member States in the development or refinement of respective national or regional legislative approaches. Where Member States or regions do not intend to develop legislation for co-existence, these guidelines could support the development of voluntary standards for good agricultural practice.

European Platform on Life Cycle Assessment
The “European Platform on Life Cycle Assessment” is a project of the European Commission, carried out by the JRC Institute for Environment and Sustainability in collaboration with DG Environment.
The project is supporting the implementation of the Thematic Strategies on the Prevention and Recycling of Waste and on the Sustainable Use of Natural Resources, the Integrated Product Policy (IPP) Communication and the preparation of the upcoming Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) Action Plan.
The purpose is to improve credibility, acceptance and practice of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in business and public authorities, by providing reference data and recommended methods for LCA studies.

Scientific & technical reference system on renewable energy and energy end-use efficiency
The EU has agreed to ambitious targets to reduce carbon dioxide emissions when ratifying the Kyoto Protocol. It has set indicative renewable energy and energy efficiency targets for each of the Member States of the EU, giving a clear political signal and impetus to action to increase the use of renewables.
The European Commission has the task and the mandate to continuously monitor and evaluate the progress achieved in implementing renewable energies and energy end-use efficiency. Therefore it is indispensable to have up-to-date references in this important field of sustainable development.
European energy strategy and policy is strongly driven by the twin objectives of sustainability (including environmental aspects) and security of energy supply. Implementation of renewable energy (RE) systems and improved energy end-use efficiency (EEE) are key means of satisfying these objectives.
STRS is a new form of information and open reference system which serves the pressing need for information and analyses. It fuels common and harmonised socio-economic tools for energy strategy concerning the implementation of new and emerging energy technologies. STRS should increase the common understanding and become a practical "one-stop-shop" giving unbiased, reliable and organised information on renewable energy and energy end-use efficiency.
