As a Directorate-General of the European Commission, the JRC offers a stimulating multicultural, multilingual work environment, as well as the opportunity to be at the centre of European policy-making. The JRC employs some 2750 people and has an active policy of attracting bright and able scientists. Working conditions
Equal opportunities, and in particular gender equality in its working environment, have been proactively promoted since 2000 in the JRC. We reward initiative, and encourage entrepreneurial spirit that leads to commercial exploitation of our technologies. We welcome increasing numbers of researchers from new Member States and applicant countries to work with us on a temporary basis, and are equally keen to provide access to our facilities for research and training. The JRC's staff is located in the Brussels headquarters and at Institutes in Belgium, Italy, Germany, Spain and the Netherlands. All our Institutes offer on-site restaurant facilities for staff and information to assist newcomers with relocation and integration. Bringing up a family is made easier by the availability of international school facilities. As a general rule, pre- and post-school care is offered, as well as crèche and nursery facilities for babies and younger children.
What research activities can I work on with the JRC?
The JRC multiannual work programme for 2007 to 2013 covers a wide range of research activities, which include subjects like the food chain, biotechnology, safety of chemicals, health environment ,climate change and natural disasters, energy and transport, nuclear energy (incl. safety and security), information society technologies, rural development, internal/external security, antifraud and development aid as well as horizontal activities in technology foresight and reference materials and measurements. Furthermore, the JRC is continuously participating in indirect actions - shared cost actions, integrated projects and networks of excellence under the Community Framework Programme (FP) – and is also engaged in third party work and technology transfer. The JRC opens all of these research activities to European scientists, giving unrivalled opportunities for you to work in partnership with the JRC as well as providing access to the JRC’s unique facilities for research and training. Collaboration with the JRC in these areas is possible through a series of mechanisms for both individuals and organisations.
What individual work opportunities does the JRC offer?
There are various opportunities to work and train with the JRC, which range from permanent appointments to fellowships for young researchers and senior scientists. There are also possibilities for short and long-term collaboration with the JRC.
- Statutory Staff: Staff whose employment is governed either by the EU Staff Regulations (link to SR) of Officials of the European Communities or by the Conditions of employment of other servants of the European Communities. Statutory staff may be permanent or temporary depending on the type of post to be filled and the type of contract offered.
