Janez Potočnik speaking at EU Research Information event, Tirana, 06/05/2008
Albania on the way into the European Research Area
Following Albania's recent decision to join in the EU's R&D effort under its 7th Framework Programme for Research and Technology Development (FP7), a Research Information Event, organised by the European Commission, COST (European Cooperation in the field of Scientific and Technical Research) and the Albanian Ministry for Science and Education, took place in Tirana on 6 May 2008.
The event brought together over 150 Albanian participants including senior representatives from the academic and business communities with the goal of raising awareness of the opportunities offered by the recently signed agreement.
Opening the event alongside the Albanian Minister of Education & Science, Mr Pollo, and the Minister of Integration, Ms Bregu, the European Commissioner for Science and Research, Janez Potočnik, stated that the association with FP7 should encourage Albanian Researchers to further collaborate with scientists and experts across the EU Member States and the other Balkan countries on an equal footing.
Representatives from three Directorate Generals of the European Commission, namely DG Research, DG Information Society and Media and the Joint Research Centre, provided detailed information in S&T areas of priority for Albania, in particular environment, health, ICT, metrology and measurements.
The JRC is actively supporting Albania in taking up the EU body of law through its Enlargement and Integration Action. The setting up of the national metrology institute in Albania, which will perform measurements required under several EU directives, provides a perfect example of the synergies between the JRC , the EU pre-accession programmes and the Albanian national authorities.
