Water quality symbolic
Joint Research Centre's Contribution to World Water Day
The JRC Institute for Environment and Sustainability (IES) is accompanying the preparation and implementation of European legislation for the regulation of chemical pollutants in the aquatic environment. IES has been working on the harmonisation of monitoring by chairing multinational working groups, preparing guidance, conducting measurement campaigns and conducting field trials in order to derive the best chemical monitoring practises.
In the context of its support to the Water Framework Directive (WFD) and related legislation, the JRC has organised an EU-wide perspective on the occurrence of polar emerging pollutants in European rivers.
The IES also carries out research, through the action European Ecological Water Quality Assessment and Intercalibration, to better understand aquatic systems functioning and ultimately to develop indicators for assessing ecological status and biodiversity . An example of recent and ongoing research projects in this area is the development of an assessment tool for sub-Alpine lakes in Austria, Germany and Italy.
Furthermore, the Intercalibration Exercise also encompasses all WFD biological quality elements across all surface water categories , and it is aimed to ensure consistency and comparability of the classification results and the monitoring systems based on the biological quality elements that are operated by each member state.
