VII World Congress on Alternatives & Animal Use in the Life Sciences
Rome (IT) - 30/08/09 - 03/09/09
7th World Congress on alternatives and animal use in the life sciences
The 7th World Congress on alternatives and animal use in the life sciences, taking place in Rome from 30 August to 3 September, is addressing the progress towards the reduction, refinement and replacement of experimental animals and the scientific progress in this area.
In a series of speeches and presentations, scientists from the Institute for Health and Consumer Protection (IHCP) are presenting the JRC's contribution to this field, in particular through the European Centre for the Validation of Alternative Methods, ECVAM.
ECVAM’s main responsibility is to verify the validity of alternative test methods, as well as to participate in the scientific work leading to these methods and in the follow-up to the scientific validation, which is required to reach acceptance of the new methods – within the EU and internationally (e.g. on OECD level). The Systems Toxicology Unit at IHCP also strongly contributes to the work of ECVAM. Its High Throughput Screening facility automates in vitro assays to produce large high-quality data sets and it applies the latest imaging and sensing technologies for high content analysis of cells and tissue in culture.
