Cyprus conference: scientific support to innovation in the services sector
New services can vitalise the economy, as they generate jobs and growth, and the services sector accounts already for about two thirds of employment and GDP in Europe. Innovation in this area can be driven by the exploitation of new technologies, new markets or new organisational structures.
In this context, the JRC has held today a conference in Nicosia , co-organised with the Research Promotion Foundation of Cyprus under the auspices of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The aim is to provide a forum for expert discussions on how developments in this area can support European competitiveness and economic growth.
Eleni Mavrou, Minister of the Interior of Cyprus, responsible for the Research portfolio during the Cyprus Presidency and Dominique Ristori, Director General of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC), took part in the opening.
Speakers also included the OECD, several European Commission's Directorates General, international organisations and Cypriot representatives.
