JRC Annual Report 2011 now available

 

This Annual Report offers an insight into activities and achievements related to the JRC's work carried out during 2011. With new look and more concise content, the report aims to make JRC results more accessible.

In her foreword, European Commissioner Máire Geoghegan-Quinn for Research, Innovation and Science, emphasises the role of science and investment in research in order to speed up European economic recovery and create more growth and jobs for its citizens. “This is where the expertise of the European Commission’s in-house science service, the Joint Research Centre (JRC) comes into play”, she says.

JRC Director-General, Dominique Ristori, describes 2011 as important for the JRC and points to the support provided by JRC to Europe 2020 policy priorities, as well as to reinforced ties with national governments, the science community, the industry and other key international partners.

The report gives an overview of JRC's results in the past year, highlighting studies on rare earth metals, renewable energies in Africa, global food security monitoring, nanomaterials’ safety and nuclear stress tests. Among other topics featuring in the report: tracking smart grids development, testing of critical infrastructure during solar storms, assessing pollutants in soil and water and analysing the safety of plastic kitchenware.
