Third International Conference on Alternatives for Developmental Neurotoxicity Testing (DNT3)
Advancing the science of developmental neurotoxicity testing
The JRC is hosting the Third International Conference on Alternatives for Developmental Neurotoxicity Testing (DNT3) on 10-13 May 2011 in Varese, Italy. The event brings together over 100 scientists and representatives from academia, industry and governmental organisations working on children's health, alternatives to animal testing and environmental protection.
Human beings are exposed throughout their life to many chemical substances, even during the pre-natal period. The effects of the pre-natal and early childhood exposure on the developing and maturing nervous system are of growing concern. It has been found that exposure to high levels of toxic substances in early life may lead to lasting neurological complications and may impose substantial burdens on affected individuals, their families and society.
The conference, which is the first of its kind in Europe after two previously held in the US in 2006 and 2008, will discuss the state of the art of the scientific knowledge in this field and aims at raising awareness of developmental neurotoxicity (DNT) and its importance. Participants from around 20 different countries will also debate the progress in developing alternative (non-animal) methods for DNT-testing and the role of integrated biological and toxicological approaches.
The programme is organised by the JRC's Institute for Health and Consumer Protection and will take place at the Ville Ponti Congress Centre in Varese, Italy.
