Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union
Joint JRC-Hungary event examined roots of innovation
The Hungarian Ministry for National Economy and the National Innovation Office together with the JRC organised a conference entitled "Towards an Open and Competitive Economy: Examining the Roots of Innovation" on 5 April 2011. This conference was held under the auspices of the Hungarian EU Presidency and took place in the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest.
The conference aimed at contributing to the Europe 2020 strategy by examining how science can support macroeconomic policies, structural reforms and the employment, education and skills agenda.
Over 120 experts attended the conference, where decision makers from national governments, industry and different services of the European Commission (the JRC, the Information Society and Media DG, the Regional Policy DG) shared experiences and discussed how to better define policy options aiming at promoting innovation and competitiveness at Member State and European level.
To ensure the continuity of the conclusions of the conference, EU Council Presidencies were represented - including past (Belgium), current (Hungary), and upcoming ones (Poland, Denmark). Representatives from a number of other countries took part in the conference: Croatia, the Czech Republic, Germany, Norway, Romania, Serbia, Ukraine and the United States.
The conclusions of the conference will be presented by the Hungarian Presidency at the Informal Competitiveness Council, 11-13 April 2011.
The event demonstrated the fruitful collaboration between the Hungarian Presidency and the JRC.
