UK Department for Business, Innovation and Skills visits JRC Ispra
The UK government's department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) plays a pivotal role as ‘department for growth' and is leading work across the UK government to develop a more balanced and sustainable model for growth. As responsible for science policy, BIS is one of the main counterparts for the JRC in the UK.
The objective of their visit was twofold: (1) to get to know the JRC's activities portfolio and (2) to discuss how research organisations like the JRC can better help policy-makers to meet the key global challenges, both in the Mamber states and in the EU as a whole.
The BIS delegation held meetings with JRC management and scientists and visited important laboratories seeing, at first hand, how the JRC supports EU policy making. The discussions were interactive and the delegation promised to spread information about the work done by the JRC back in the UK. Discussions ensued on the possible role of the JRC in the upcoming Eight Framework Programme (FP8), with special focus on supporting the objectives of the Europe 2020 Strategy.
