JRC promotes scientific careers across the Atlantic
The JRC was presented at the 15th European Career Fair (ECF 2011), which took place between 21 and 23 January 2011 in Cambridge MA, USA, where the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is situated. The European Commission is partnering with the ECF since 2007 to promote Europe as a great place to pursue a career in science and technology, be it in industrial research, research organisations, academia or science policy.
This is the largest such event in the USA and the 2011 fair attracted 121 EU research organisations and companies engaged in research with more than 5 000 students looking for career opportunities in S&T in Europe.
The opportunity to raise visibility among both European and US scientific communities was augmented by the high concentration of some of the brightest young scientists and the number of leading European research organisations and national/regional representations, the majority of which have existing or potential partnerships with the JRC (Fraunhofer, ETH Zurich, TNO, Max Planck Society, etc.)
A overview of the JRC was presented on the morning of the first day during a joint session with colleagues from the seventh Framework Programme (FP7), Euraxess and European Research Council. The presentation was well received and the JRC stand attracted considerable interest with staff actively promoting opportunities for permanent and grantholders positions among young scientists, 1/3 of which were EU citizens looking for placements back in Europe.
