JRC re-news commitment to standardisation activities
Roland Schenkel, Director General of the JRC, and Elena Santiago Cid, Director General of the European Committee for Standardization and the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization, expressed their mutual desire to continue their cooperation in the field of standardisation and pre-normative and co-normative research by signing a renewed collaboration agreement.
Formal cooperation between the two organisation dates back to 1998. The JRC's work supports the establishment of European and worldwide standards in many areas, including safety and quality of food and feed, GMO's, safety of chemicals, air, water and soil quality, spatial data infrastructures, energy or construction codes in the building sector.
One particular example in this context is the work of the JRC Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements (IRMM), which offers a wide range of services in the fields of metrology, standardisation, harmonisation and quality of measurements. Today the IRMM is one of the world’s largest reference material producers, expert adviser in food safety and quality and bio analysis as well as a valued provider of reference measurement data. It works in close collaboration with the other JRC institutes and with research institutes, universities and international organisations worldwide.
