May/June 2013 issue of the JRC newsletter
The latest edition of the JRC Newsletter has been published and can be downloaded here.
This issue features an editorial by the Irish Minister for Research & Innovation, Sean Sherlock T.D. The cover story presents in detail the first Soil Atlas of Africa, produced by the JRC in collaboration with the African Union, FAO, the African Soil Science Society and soil scientists from Africa and Europe. It also provides an insight into JRC’s activities in assessment of soil resources at European and global scale.
Among the news are stories on €1.8 billion invested in smart grids projects in Europe, the EU reference laboratory for alternatives to animal testing (EURL ECVAM) recommendation on an in vitro assay for acute oral toxicity testing and a renewed look at Europe's population distribution.
Further reading provides details on alien species on the rise in European seas, a new method for the detection of antibiotics in feed and the opening of the JRC actinide labs to the EU scientific community.
The newsletter also includes briefs on new scientific clusters to support the Danube strategy, emission requirements for cement lime and magnesium oxide production, and the inauguration of a new training centre for nuclear security.
The purpose of the JRC Newsletter is to provide customers, stakeholders and staff, along with anyone interested in who we are and what we do, with a selection of recent highlights of JRC science and technology, support to European policy making, contributions to scientific events and other news of interest.
