The Commission proposes more efficient rules for border crossing

10/03/2011

On 10 March 2011, the Commission proposed to further improve EU rules governing the control of borders. Amending the Schengen Borders Code will facilitate the movement of persons across internal or external borders of an EU country, while maintaining a high level of control and surveillance.

The Schengen Borders Code (Regulation (EC) No 562/2006 ) entered into force in October 2006. It established a Community Code with standards and procedures on crossing external borders and on reintroducing checks at internal borders.

After four years of practical application, the need for a number of practical and technical amendments to the Schengen Borders Code has emerged.
