Project Description

All of Latvia’s schools are now in possession of ‘Atvērsim vārtus!’ (‘Open the gate!’). These modern teaching materials are specifically aimed at migrant children aged between 13 and 18 years, who arrive in Latvia without knowledge of the Latvian language. The materials form the basis of a 60-hour course that corresponds to the introductory language level A1.

When designing the resources, the Latvian Language Agency was aiming to: introduce the students to Latvian lexicon and phrases that are needed in everyday situations; provide basic grammar necessary to develop conversational skills; present practical language applications, such as addressing an envelope; and highlight cultural traditions to aid integration into Latvian society.

Benefits and results

Teachers may use the resources to develop their own programmes and materials, or simply use them as they are. They are designed to be accessible to all migrant children aged 13 to 18 years old, and the Latvian Language Agency hopes that they will encourage and motivate the teenagers to learn Latvian, develop a personal interest in Latvia, and in doing so become more integrated into Latvian society.
