|Project dates||01/01/2012 - 30/06/2014|
|Total budget||€67 000|
|Name of the entity managing the project||National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police, Technical division|
The Visa Information System (VIS) is being developed jointly by the Schengen countries so that they may collect and share visa information. For Iceland to implement the system, the country must first invest in software development and system testing, as well as the purchase of necessary equipment, such as fingerprint scanners, cameras and computers.
By implementing this project, Iceland is fulfilling its obligations within the Schengen Agreement. The VIS system makes it easier for Schengen countries to obtain visa information from other Schengen countries – for example what visas have already been issued. As the authority responsible for border surveillance in Iceland, the Icelandic Police are the main beneficiaries.
