The Cyprus Police purchased two medium-sized twin engine utility helicopters to strengthen border control and surveillance. The helicopters also boosted the operational capacity of the police working in the area, ensuring external borders were effectively protected and guarded.
At an EU level, this project increases Cyprus' contribution towards efforts to exercise border control and surveillance in the Mediterranean in the interest of the border-free Schengen area. The helicopter also supports the EU's FRONTEX activities (management of operational cooperation at the EU’s external borders) in terms of border patrols.
The purchase of the two helicopters has increased border security and helped make patrol and irregular immigration operations more mobile. In the longer term, the project will help Cyprus to be more effective in control, surveillance, detection, identification and intervention at its external borders, especially where there is a high risk of irregular immigration.
In addition, it will result in systems for the methodical collection of information on the evolving situation on the ground – close to, at, and immediately beyond Cyprus’ external borders.
