Commissioner Dalli at the International Green Week in Berlin - [ 19-21 January 2012 ]
From 19-21 January, Commissioner Dalli visited Berlin's International Green Week - the world's largest food and and agriculture fair attracting over 600,000 visitors each year.
The Commissioner toured the fair with German agriculture Minister Ilse Aigner, and Mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit. He was impressed by the scale of the event, saying it was a real "opportunity to demonstrate the importance we attach to ensuring the safety of our food chain in Europe"
At the DG Health & Consumers stand, he took questions from 17 pupils from the Astrid-Lindgren school of Berlin. Educating children about animal health, food safety and animal welfare is a key plank of the Commission's "vets in your daily life" campaign.
Mr Dalli presented the Commission's new animal welfare strategy 2012-15 at an event hosted by the Fordergemeinschaft Nachhaltige Landwirtschaft. He said that "animal welfare is an area where Europe leads the world, and (the strategy) will strengthen this position by improving welfare standards and compliance to meet the wishes and expectations of the European public."
The Commissioner also met with the Director General of the World Organisation for Animal Health, Bernard Vallat, and sigend a Memorandum of Understanding, building on the cooperation between the two organisations.
