SCCS opinion on Silica, Hydrated Silica, and Silica Surface Modified with Alkyl Silylates (nano form)

Today, the European Commission and its Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS), has published the Opinion on “Silica, Hydrated Silica, and Silica Surface Modified with Alkyl Silylates (nano form)”.

The commenting period will run until 26 June 2015. Interested parties are invited to provide comments on the scientific evidence of this preliminary opinion online:

Synthetic amorphous silica (SAS) materials are used in cosmetics and other consumer products including pharmaceuticals and foods. In cosmetics, it is typically leave-on and rinse-off products that use these ingredients in nano form. This includes hair, skin, lip, face, and nail products at different concentrations and with different specifications.

The aim of the opinion is to provide a safety assessment of four types of nano-silica (Silica, Hydrated Silica, Silica Silylate and Silica Dimethyl Silylate) used in cosmetics, taking into account the exposure conditions that can be reasonably foreseen. This is the first scientific Opinion based on information submitted via the Cosmetic Product Notification Portal (CPNP) – a free, online notification system created for the implementation of the Cosmetic Products Regulation (EC/1223/2009).
