Foot-and-mouth disease in the UK: Restrictions prolonged

The Standing Veterinary Committee (SVC) voted in favour of a European Commission proposal to prolong the restrictions still applying to the United Kingdom (UK) with regard to foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) until 30 November 2001. These restrictions are: The prohibition to export from Great Britain live susceptible animals and their germinal products, fresh meat and meat products, fresh milk and milk products and other animal products from those species, unless the latter are treated appropriately. A derogation from the existing restrictions has been accepted for frozen bovine semen. Under strict conditions, the dispach of frozen bovine semen produced after 30 September 2001 will be allowed. The proposal will now be adopted by the Commission in the next few days and will be reviewed at the next meeting of the SVC, scheduled for 9-10 October.
