Commission highlights importance of animal health to human health during Spa event

The European Commission will stress the vital link between animal and public health during an event organised over the weekend (March 27-28) by the Belgian veterinary and medical associations in Spa.

This will be done through "One Health," the Commission's Directorate General for Health and Consumers road-show. The road-show follows the EU Veterinary Week of 2009, which was launched at the end of September. A joint initiative of the European Commission and the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE), the EU Veterinary Week was organised for the first time in 2008 and highlights the important role played by European veterinarians in society. The key slogan retained for the week in 2009 was "Animals + Humans = One Health," highlighting the importance of animal health to public health.

The event in Spa aims to improve cooperation between the veterinary and medical professions as animal diseases are having an increasing impact on public health. Consequently, high standards of animal health have a positive impact on human health and consumer wellbeing.
