FAO Gateaway to Farm Animal Welfare
DG Health and Consumers
As highlighted in a recent FAO initiative on Capacity Building to Implement Good Animal Welfare Practices, “In many regions, a secure supply of food for people depends on the health and productivity of animals, and these in turn depend on the care and nutrition the animals receive".
Education, communication and capacity building are the key elements to promote the implementation of international standards and good practices on animal welfare.
FAO has launched a new internet portal on farm animal welfare that will serve as a one-stop-shop for individuals and organizations searching for the latest information about the welfare of farm animals. By giving them online access to the latest information, it will help developing countries to improve livestock management as well as to develop agribusinesses and open new opportunities for trade.
Managed by FAO, the portal has been launched in strict collaboration with key international partners in animal welfare which the European Commission and the World Organisation for Animal Health, the International Fund for Agricultural Development, the World Veterinary Association, European and international main NGOs, the International Dairy Federation and the International Federation of Agriculture Producers.
In a joint effort to improve animal welfare globally and according to the Community Action Plan on the Protection and Welfare of Animals 2006-2010, the European Commission is actively contributing to the initiative.
