EU Health Commissioner addresses 10th European Day for Organ Donation and Transplantation

Ljubljana, Slovenia, 18 October 2008, the EU Health Commissioner, Ms. Androulla Vassiliou addressed participants at the 10th European Day for Organ Donation and Transplantation by video message.
In her video speech Commissioner Vassiliou pointed out that: "The European Donation day is the perfect occasion to raise awareness on the importance of organ donation and transplantation, to express solidarity and support to all those in need of organ transplants, and to honor all donors and their families and express our gratitude to them."
This year's European Day for Organ Donation and Transplantation was organised and co-hosted by the Institute for Transplantation of Organs and Tissues of the Republic of Slovenia and the Council of Europe. Participants included patients' organisations, health professionals and donor families. Topics for discussion ranged from scientific and organisational aspects of organ donation and transplantation to psychological and social points of view including ethical questions related to organ donation.

The idea behind this annual event is to encourage a different Member State to host it each year. This will raise awareness and discussion on the need to improve organ donation and transplantation in different parts of Europe.
