High-level DG SANCO conference to discuss future challenges for health, consumer and food policies

The Directorate General for Health and Consumers (DG SANCO) will hold on 29 and 30 October a high-level conference to validate the main drivers of change for EU health, consumer and food policies over the next 10 years. The conference entitled "Delivering for Tomorrow's European Consumers" will be the concluding event of the DG SANCO Future Challenges exercise – a largely participative and innovative reflection process that started two years ago when we took a step back to consider the policy challenges and opportunities that DG SANCO is likely to face during the mandate of the next Commission (2009-2014).

Consumers' Commissioner Meglena Kuneva and Health Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou will be participating in the event. The list of key-note speakers also includes Pinto Balsemao, the former Prime Minister of Portugal, Peter Medgyessy, former Prime Minister of Hungary, and Pat Cox, former President of the European Parliament and member of the Irish Parliament.

Many additional speakers will contribute to a series of panel sessions to discuss trends and focus on some specific issues, including the impact of new technologies on consumer confidence; understanding and using consumer behaviour in SANCO policies; achieving sustainability; prioritising health actions; and mechanisms for working together (such as public-private partnerships).

In addition, with the support of the European Youth Forum, we are encouraging the participation of young people from different EU countries, who will be given the opportunity to express their views on how they think the future will evolve.

The event is expected to attract approximately 250 participants, including high-level business and civil society representatives, academics and policy-makers from Brussels, Member States and third countries.
