EU Platform for Action on Diet, Physical Activity and Health - Plenary meeting 23 April 2008

The EU Platform for Action on Diet, Physical Activity and Health meets today in Brussels. Chaired by Robert Madelin, the Director General of DG Health and Consumers, this innovative mechanism brings together key stakeholders with an aim to explore best practice and encourage voluntary action in areas such as:
  • nutrition education
  • advertising and marketing
  • product development
  • promoting physical activity
Since its inception, in March 2005, the membership has doubled to 34 European organisations with over 200 commitments tabled. The Platform has proved itself to be a stimulus for debate but three years on and the focus has shifted to results and action. In 2008, greater emphasis will be placed on monitoring and evaluating the members' commitments. There will be targeted action areas for each of the 4 plenary meetings in 2008 - starting with discussions on food labelling and reformulation (portion size, food composition) for today's meeting.
