The European Commission Scientific Committees Newsletter

The three Scientific Committees on Consumer Products (SCCP), Health and Environmental Risks (SCHER) and Newly Identified Health Risks (SCENIHR) now publish a newsletter three times per year (January, May and September) providing updates on their work.

The Scientific Committees provide the Commission with sound scientific advice which it uses when preparing policy proposals in the areas of consumer safety, public health and the environment. In addition to this, the Committees also draw the Commission's attention to any new or emerging problems which may pose a potential threat.

In particular, the SCCP is systematically consulted on the safety of cosmetics under the Cosmetics Directive and other consumer products such as toys, sun beds etc.
The SCHER provides advice on risk assessment of chemicals, health and the environment.
The SCHENIHR examines new issues such as potential risks of the electromagnetic fields or of nano-technology.
