Health Committee of German Parliament convenes in Brussels

The European Commission's recently published Health Strategy and the upcoming draft Directive for cross-border healthcare were two of the main topics of discussion during the external session of the Health Committee of the German Parliament that was held in Brussels on Wednesday, December 5. Members of the committee were received on Wednesday afternoon by Health Commissioner Markos Kyprianou with whom they discussed primarily the Commission's White Paper "Together for Health: A Strategic Approach for the EU 2008-2013."

During the morning, Robert Madelin, Director-General of the Commission's DG for Health and Consumer Protection (DG SANCO), briefed the committee on the draft directive on cross-border healthcare, which the Commission is expected to adopt on December 19. The committee convened at the European Parliament's premises in Brussels and its members also had the opportunity to discuss with Mr. Madelin and Andrzej Rys, Director of DG SANCO's Directorate C, the Commission's Health Strategy and other public health topics, such as the ongoing fight against HIV/AIDS.
