Commission requests scientific opinion on potential health risks posed by personal music players and mobile phones including this function

The Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks (SCENIHR) has been asked by DG SANCO (Health and Consumer Protection) and DG ENTR (Enterprise and Industry) to assess the potential health risks posed by noise caused by devices such as personal music players and mobile phones with this function, in particular hearing loss and /or hearing impairment to the user.
The regulatory framework currently regulating the safety of this equipment includes: The Directive 1999/5/EC on health and safety aspects of radio equipment and mobile phones, the Low Voltage Directive 2006/95/EC on health and safety aspects of electrical equipment operating within certain voltage ranges and the General Product Safety Directive 2001/95/EC ensuring consumer product safety.
The Committee will assess whether the exposure to noise from personal music players may cause health risks and, in case health risks are discovered, identify the exposure levels of noise emission offering the citizens sufficient protection.
