Commission holds training workshop on controls at seaport Border Inspection Posts

This year's first Better Training for Safer Food workshop on veterinary checks at seaport Border Inspection Posts (BIPs) takes place on 21-24 May. The workshop is held in Livorno, Italy. Around 40 participants are expected to attend. They will be mainly official border post veterinarians from EU Member State and candidate countries carrying out official controls in seaport BIPs. Two further workshops on veterinary checks at seaport BIPs are scheduled for 10-13 and 24-27 September, also in Livorno.
Border controls are key for protecting public, animal and plant health. EU legislation imposes health and supervisory requirements on imports of live animals and animal products to guarantee compliance with European standards. The training aims to raise participants' awareness of best practices for veterinary controls, thereby ensuring consistently high implementation standards across the EU.
On the first afternoon an overview of relevant EU legislation is provided. The rest of the workshop is spent on case studies covering issues such as selection of consignments for checks, disposal of waste animal products, procedures for consignments in transit, and cross-sector co-operation. Participants will also visit the Livorno seaport BIP.
