Animal Health and Welfare (10-05-2006)
Workshop on Animal Welfare in Transportation.
The Health and Consumer Protection Directorate-General and the EU Joint Research Centre (JRC) are organising an international workshop on the use of navigation systems when transporting animals, on 12-13 June 2006 in Induno-Olono (near Varese), Italy.
The JRC is in the process of drafting technical specifications for the use of such navigation systems, as required by Regulation (EC) 1/2005 for long journey road transportation of livestock.
The aims of the workshop are:
- To gather opinions on the legislation and specifications.
- To raise awareness of future legislation on animal welfare requirements in transportation.
- To discuss the possible technical and economic implications.
- To identify further research needs on navigation systems.
Participants will include livestock transporters and traders, animal welfare organisations, manufacturers of long journey trailer equipment, MemberState relevant authorities and the European Commission.
In December 2004 the Commission adopted a new regulation on the Transport of live animals. This regulation introduced the requirement for satellite navigation systems, to enable Member States to improve their animal inspections and enforcement. In order to ensure compatibility of satellite navigations systems used on cross-border transport, the Commission is seeking maximum participation of stakeholders in the preparation of legislation on the requirements of such systems.
