Consumer Policy Perspectives Conference: Commissioner Kyprianou Calls For Debate on Product Labelling
Commissioner Kyprianou called for a “horizontal discussion on labelling”, involving all stakeholders and based on proper information on consumer behaviour, at the joint Commission/Luxembourg Presidency conference on Consumer Policy Perspectives yesterday. Labelling as a means of providing consumers with information was the theme of the conference, and participants discussed such issues as nutritional labelling, geographical indications, eco-labelling, fair trade labelling and social labelling. A new study on consumer attitudes and perspectives, which was commissioned by DG Health and Consumer Protection, was presented and helped to shape the debates. In his speech, the Commissioner concluded that the challenges and opportunities of new technologies and consumer patterns, as well as the scope for simplifying labelling requirements for the benefit of industry and consumers, needed to be carefully considered in future debates and actions related to labelling.
