First meeting of the Commission Expert Group on Cancer Control: 23-24 September 2014

Today in Milan, EU Health Commissioner, Tonio Borg, and Italian Minister of Health, Beatrice Lorenzin opened the first meeting of the Commission Expert Group on Cancer Control which has been established by a Commission Decision dated 3 June 2014. The expert group, chaired by the Commission, brings together representatives from Member State national authorities as well as representatives from patient groups, scientific and medical associations specialised in cancer, organisations working on cancer prevention, and industry.

Addressing the audience, Commissioner Borg explained "to be fully effective, cancer control needs to be implemented in full co-ordination among the Commission, Member State authorities and the relevant and numerous stakeholders in the cancer field. This need for effective coordination underpins why the Commission has established this Group of Experts on Cancer Control."

The agenda of this two day meeting includes setting out the tasks and internal rules of procedure for the Expert Group. The Commission will present an overview of the EU priorities in the field cancer and an implementation report on previous work on cancer. It will also give a state-of play on the ongoing CANCON Joint Action (European Guide on Quality Improvement in Comprehensive Cancer Control) and progress towards a European Cancer Information System. Finally, the International Agency for Research on Cancer will present the 4 th edition of the European Code Against Cancer, and the Expert Group will discuss its dissemination.
