Commission establishes expert group on cancer control

Today, the European Commission adopts a Decision which establishes an expert group on cancer control. The expert group will assist with drawing up legal instruments, policy documents, guidelines and recommendations on cancer control, at the request of the Commission. It will also, upon request, help prepare guidelines on cancer data including epidemiology, cancer screening, quality assurance and information on cancer prevention, clinical cancer research, as well as for cross-cutting themes related to cancer.

Members of the expert group will include representatives of EU, EEA and EFTA countries, as well as representatives of patients’ organisations, organisations active in cancer prevention, European professional or scientific associations and one representative of the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

A call for expression of interest will be launched shortly. Once selected, the members will be appointed by Ms Testori Coggi, Director-General for Health and Consumers, and their names will be published in the Register of Commission expert groups. The term of office of members of the expert group shall be three years and may be renewed after having responded to a further call for expression of interest. The documents/guidelines produced by the expert group will be publicly available.
