Call for information on the safety of Silica (nano)

The Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) has received a request for a scientific opinion on the safety of Silica (nano) including:

  • Silica (nano) CAS n. 112945-52-5
  • Hydrated Silica (nano) CAS n. 112926-00-8
  • Silica Sylilate (nano) CAS n. 68909-20-6
  • Silica Dimethyl Silylate (nano) CAS n. 68611-44-9

Today, the European Commission and its non-food Scientific Committee on Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS), launch a call for information on the above. Interested parties are invited to submit online any relevant information (*) that could assist the scientific committee on the safety assessment.

The call will run until 31 May 2014.

(*) e.g. the type of cosmetic product using these ingredients (silica in nano structured form) and their concentration; protocols of applications; differences in solubility, including for surface coated materials; information on adverse health effects; results from toxicological tests with such products or ingredients contained within - including inhalation toxicity, genotoxicity/carcinogenicity/ toxicokinetic studies, photocatalytic activity and phototoxic effect, or any other scientific data/publications considered relevant to assess the safety of such products.
