Plant health: New market access for potatoes to the EU from Lebanon

Measures that grant for the first time market access for Lebanese potatoes to the EU were endorsed by experts meeting in the Standing Committee on Plant Health (SCPH) today. Under these measures, ware potatoes from Lebanon can be exported to the EU provided they satisfy certain plant health requirements. These requirements include restricting export to potatoes exclusively produced in certain regions in Lebanon that are known to be free from potato ring rot (Clavibacter michiganensis ssp. sepedonicus) a serious quarantine disease of potatoes. Potatoes will also be subject to an intensive examination by Plant Health inspectors at their arrival in the EU.

The new measures are expected to enter into force by September 2013.
