EU holds seminar on market-driven Animal Welfare Strategy in Washington

On 22 March 2012, the European Institute and the Delegation of the European Union will organise a seminar on the EU animal welfare strategy in Washington. The objective of the seminar is three-fold:

  • to present the new EU animal welfare strategy to a US audience,
  • to seek common areas for future cooperation in animal welfare matters and
  • to explore the growing role that the private sector plays in resolving animal welfare issues.

Unveiled on 19 January 2012, the European Commission's Strategy seeks not only to improve animal welfare standards through a simplified EU legislative framework, but also aims to improve the information available to consumers and enhance the global competitiveness of European agricultural products. This seminar will bring together experts from the European Commission, U.S. Government, businesses, NGO's and academia.
