Public consultation on a preliminary opinion: Improvement of Risk Assessment in View of the Needs of Risk Managers
Today, the European Commission and its 3 independent, non-food Scientific Committees launch a consultation on the preliminary scientific opinion on the Improvement of Risk Assessment in View of the Needs of Risk Managers. The consultation will run until 21 February 2012 and stakeholders are invited to provide feedback on the scientific evidence and conclusions online.
The motivation for this opinion has been the perception, from all parties, that risk assessments as currently carried out do not inform the risk management process as well as they should. The conclusions point to several avenues for improvement: (i) more dialogue between risk assessors and risk managers and the evaluation of possible risk-management options; (ii) expression of risk assessments in terms of value-relevant impacts on humans and ecosystems; and (iii) better communication of the risks including the evaluation of different possible scenarios, full characterization of the whole populations/ ecosystems and clear expressions of the uncertainties.
