Animal Health and Welfare (02-12-2011)
Training of vet practitioners continues
From 1-2 December the European Commission Health and Consumers Directorate General, and the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe organised the second regional workshop on animal welfare tailor made for veterinary practitioners. The workshop took place in Barcelona.
Following the success of the first event, which took place in Budapest on 26-27 September 2011, continuing its work to improve animal welfare standards, the Commission is aiming to ensure practitioners have a deeper understanding of animal welfare legislation, critical welfare issues and species-specific welfare assessment schemes.
Veterinary surgeons have an important role in providing expertise and knowledge to the general public and animal keepers as well as to policy makers.
As in Budapest, the workshop will consist of both a theoretical as well as a practical on-farm session, where participants can put their knowledge in practice.
The workshop was attended by veterinary farm animal practitioners mostly from Spain but also from Italy, Portugal, Cyprus, Greece, Malta, France, Switzerland and Turkey. Veterinary and animal health related students and producers also participated.
