Markos Kyprianou hails progress on EU preparedness against influenza pandemic

Markos Kyprianou, European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection, today said that the EU was making “steady progress” in improving its defences against a possible influenza pandemic. However, he cautioned that making further progress will require sustained political support from the European Parliament and Member States. This evening in Strasbourg Mr. Kyprianou will give MEPs a progress report on Commission led efforts to improve EU-wide health defences against a pandemic. On Thursday, 14 April, Mr. Kyprianou will discuss pandemic preparedness with health ministers from the 25 EU Member State at an informal ministerial meeting in Paris. The ministerial meeting will also discuss EU cooperation in the fight against HIV/AIDS and against cancer.
