Animal Health and Welfare (14-10-2011)
Animal welfare and sustainable dairy production
Exploring ways to achieve sustainable dairy production, high animal health and welfare standards and good farm management in the international dairy sector are the main goals of a conference organised on October 17, in Parma, Italy.
During the conference, organised by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) and the International Dairy Federation (IDF), the European Commission will share possible options to integrate animal welfare and sustainable food production in the future European Strategy for animal welfare. The European Strategy on animal welfare is planned to be adopted in December 2011.
The conference is being held within the framework of the IDF World Dairy Summit, Summilk and participants include government officials, academics, scientists, representatives of the European Institutions and international associations, representatives of non-governmental organisations and other stakeholders.
This initiative has been supported by the Commission since 2009, as one of the most important international events to facilitate a strengthened communication and collaboration between all stakeholders of the dairy sector.
