Health professionals and public invited to comment on tackling healthcare associated infections

The Commission has launched an online consultation on “Strategies for improving patient safety by prevention and control of healthcare-associated infections”, with a view to developing recommendations on infection control. All stakeholders are invited to comment on a Commission document drawn up as a basis for such recommendations, in order to get as wide an input as possible into the approach that should be taken. The document looks at the problem of healthcare associated infections, which affect an estimated 1 in 10 patients, leading to an increase in mortality, illnesses and healthcare costs. It then considers what can be done to reduce such infections, both at EU and at Member State level.

The public consultation will run until January 20 2006, and comments should be submitted to SANCO-HCAI-consultation@cec.eu.int
