Public consultation on a preliminary opinion: Toxicity and Assessment of Chemical Mixtures
Today, the European Commission and its 3 independent, non-food Scientific Committees launch a consultation on the preliminary scientific opinion on the toxicity and assessment of chemical mixtures. The consultation will run until 9 September 2011 and stakeholders are invited to provide feedback on the scientific evidence and conclusions online.
Every day, humans, animals and plants are exposed to a wide variety of chemicals (chemical mixtures). Current EU legislation on chemicals is mainly based on assessments carried out on single substances. The Commission would like to ensure that EU chemicals' legislation takes into account the latest scientific information on toxicity of mixtures. In this context, the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS), the Scientific Committee on Health and Environmental Risks (SCHER) and the Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks (SCENIHR) have been asked to issue a joint opinion on the Toxicity and Assessment of Chemical Mixtures.
