Commission and EU Belgian Presidency organise first International Conference on Animal Welfare Education
The European Commission and the Belgian Presidency of the EU are organising the first International Conference on Animal Welfare Education, on 1-2 October in Brussels.
The initiative aims to better inform citizens about animal welfare and to raise awareness on the importance of educating the general public, in particular European children, about how animals should be treated. The conference's motto "Everyone is responsible" and logo depicting a hand, a cow, a sheep and a bird were chosen in order to highlight the important links between humans and animals.
The conference brings together academics, officials, teachers, veterinarians and NGO representatives from around the world who are discussing specific programmes and strategies on animal welfare. Its outcome is expected to facilitate the Commission's effort to prepare a new European Strategy for Animal Welfare.
Prince Laurent of Belgium will master a prize awarding ceremony, for the drawing contest on animal welfare dedicated to children that will take place on the second day of the event. The ceremony will be followed by an exhibition of educational programs and materials on animal welfare.
During the conference the Commission will launch the first video on animal welfare, created to inform the public and stakeholders on EU current standards and policies in this area and to create a greater consensus on animal welfare.
