The objective of the Data Strategy project, launched in 2009, is to ensure DG SANCO uses the most efficient processes and the best possible quality of evidence throughout its policy-making. An open and transparent use of trustworthy data is critical for leading European citizens and stakeholders to invest their confidence in public authority. Designing policy that is more responsive to evolving trends in policy areas also constitutes a major challenge which requires appropriate information. DG SANCO can also reinforce its value added by modernising its attitude to data, information and knowledge and by making it more widely available.
However, the data challenge is multi-faceted and cannot be solved alone. Reinforcing cooperation with its key partners and developing new types of partnerships with both public and private sectors is therefore paramount.
Therefore, a Workshop on Data Partnership was held, on the 17 th March 2010, with the participation of a wide range of DG SANCO stakeholders, representing industry (federations and individual firms), consumers and patients organisations.
The workshop aimed to discuss and find concrete and practical recommendations to maximise the mutual benefits of cooperation on data, whilst keeping in mind the specific challenges which need to be addressed. In particular, it touched upon the issue of transparency and trust while dealing with data and information, and data quality as a transversal principle in data management process.
The expected longer term output of the discussion is to build a cooperation framework between DG SANCO and its stakeholders (a Data Deal) within which both parties would make commitments on different data-related areas of interest.
DG SANCO is currently drafting a proposal for a Data Deal on the basis of the outcomes and observations of the workshop. The document will be soon available online, for public consultation.
