It contributes to fostering EU relations with these countries, which often share similar values, are major political and trading partners, and play an active role in global governance.

The ICI provides financial support for dialogue with and between stakeholders in areas of shared strategic importance with particular partner countries.

Specific ICI activities are organised around three main priority areas:

  • Public diplomacy and outreach;
  • Economic partnership and business cooperation; and
  • People-to-people links including cooperation in the field of education.

FPI ensures the operational implementation and financial management of the ICI.

Starting in 2014 and effective until 2020, the ICI will be followed by an innovative instrument: the Partnership Instrument (PI). The PI will promote the EU’s 2020 strategy abroad; address global challenges such as climate change and energy security, and support the external dimension of EU policies – competitiveness, research and innovation, etc.
