This section contains older videos whose contents are partially out-of-date but nevertheless remain interesting for the follow-up of European policy developments in energy and transport. Several of these videos feature Mrs Loyola de Palacio and Mr François Lamoureux, respectively former EC Commissioner and Director-General for Energy and Transport, who both deceased in 2006.

Nuclear inspections: half a century of safeguards in Europe
Length: 12’
Subject: For fifty years, European Commission inspectors have been verifying in nuclear installations that fissile material is not diverted from its intended peaceful use. How do these European inspectors work? What are they checking?  Examples in a classic nuclear power plant and in the French reprocessing plant at La Hague where several hundred kilos of nuclear material are recycled each year. What happens when the inspections reveal irregularities, as for instance is the case for a storage pond at the Sellafield reprocessing plant in the United Kingdom? How are nuclear inspections likely to evolve in future and what are the European Commission’s priorities for them? The video answers these questions.

Security of electricity and gas supply: Europe spins its Energy Web
Length: 11’48”
Subject: The Italian blackout of September 2003 clearly demonstrated the need to further develop interconnections between national grids and reinforce cooperation between transmission system operators. Ensuring that electricity production capacity is sufficient to cover times of peak consumption is imperative. As the EU will increasingly depend on natural gas, the key issue here is to diversify its sources of supply. These measures are taken within the framework of the completion of the single market for electricity and gas, security of supply policy and the management of energy demand.

Nuclear safety in an enlarged EU
Length: 11’34”
Subject: Nuclear safety is the subject of draft European legislation (the so-called “nuclear package”) tabled in early 2003. The European Commission’s proposals aim to guarantee a high level of nuclear safety throughout the enlarged European Union and to set up a decommissioning fund for active nuclear installations. In addition, each Member State will be obliged to develop a programme for the management of radioactive waste, including measures for disposal. The provisions will apply in the present and future Member States alike.
